There is something unique when it comes to camping, wildlife, and long trails, there is a very specific thing that is appealing to the soul. I am an outdoors enthusiast who is not always keen on hiking and camping with orthodox means of transportation, so I went on my first full electrical outdoor trip as I tried out an off-road electric bike (ebike), which changed how I enjoy nature.
Over the weekend, I went camping with my electric bike and here in this article, I will show you my journey and the process of preparing the gear and riding on the trail as well as my wildlife adventures when I went camping with my ebike last weekend. This story is just what you should read to find a relaxing, non-polluting alternative to having fun in the wild but with a greater distance capability than hiking.
Why I Chose an Off-Road Ebike for My Camping Adventure
I always liked the concept of getting deep into nature and spending a few nights there. I was never an avid hiker with heavy equipment, however, and I hated sitting in traffic on the way to a popular campground site. I have read that more and more campers and adventure seekers are turning to the popularity of off-road ebikes, so I chose to do something new.
An off-road electric bike offers:
- Pedal assist or throttle mode long rangeÂ
- Force to summit hills and go through rugged tracks
- Quiet and low impact travel that doesn’t scare away wildlife
- Space to transport minimal equipment in the form of racks or saddlebagsÂ
It was like the best of comfort, adventure and freedom.
Packing Light for the Outdoors: My Camping Setup
As I was riding an ebike, I needed to be clever in packing. I was not aiming at an ultra-light backpack but every pound counted. Those were the items I brought:
- Camping equipment: 1-man tent, sleeping bag, and inflatable matÂ
- Cooking equipment: small stove, fuel, pot, varying utensils, dried foodÂ
- Water: 2-layer hydration pack + 1 folding bottleÂ
- Clothing: vapor-permeable things, raincoat, warm socksÂ
- Safety: biking lights, repair set, first-aid kit, flashlightÂ
- Electronics: phone, power bank, GPS tracker
Most of my stored equipment went on the rear rack with the lighter items strapped to the front of my ebike. I designed a forest reserve region that was nearly 35 miles outside the city which consisted of gravel roads, trails through forest cover and off the grid camping areas. It was the testbed bar none.
The Journey Begins: Riding Through Nature
It began early on Saturday morning. The initial 10 miles were stunted tarmac, and I decided to power the ebike on low pedal assist and save battery. As soon as I touched the gravel forest access road, I turned my assist mode to medium and was glad to have thick tires and strong suspension of an off-road ebike.Â
Each twist of the track had its novelty:
- The call of birds in pine woodsÂ
- The rays of sun making their way through forestsÂ
- Sunlight carbons Sometimes deer running out in the road
The ebike enabled me to look around stealthily and with haste to experience a front view seat of wildness without intrusion. A close sighting of a red fox, lazing along a fallen tree was one of the most spectacular moments we had. I would stop, look on, and go on, a thing impossible in a busy car, or on foot.
Reaching Camp: Setting Up and Unwinding
About one o’clock, I reached a specific back country camp site between a river and a rock ridge. Thanks to effective riding and braking downhill (because of regeneration), I still had more than 60 percent battery.
I erected a tent in a shaded place, cooked up a quick hot meal (ramen with dried vegetables) and sat along the river wallowing in the peaceful environment. There is no cell signal. No distractions. Nothing but fresh air and heard distantly the rustle of trees.
Riding the ebike had provided me with the ultimate experience of getting a remote retreat without having my body physically feel too tired nor did I move too slowly, going miles on my backpack trail.
Nightfall and Wildlife Encounters
When the dusk was set the forest was thrilled. I could hear owls, could see bats flying about in the night air, and even a family of raccoons in the neighborhood of the riverbank. To prevent alarming the animals I walked a little way with a red-light headlamp and came to my tent.
I felt secure because I knew that my locked and secure, still in the vicinity, had my electric bike with a lot of battery still remaining. In the case that I had to leave earlier or I had to attend to an emergency, I could go out in a hurry.
The Return Ride: Sunrise and Scenic Trails
My next morning I arose earlier than the sun, made some instant coffee, and departed camp and quietly. I left no sign and that is a golden rule in camping.
The journey back was an even prettier one. Instead, I was detoured into a ridge path with an awesome view off the forest. I was gliding up the hills on the ebike using the throttle mechanism, and I was casually admiring the scenic view.
By the time I got back into civilization at noon I had done more than 70 miles in all, — a thing that would possibly have required three days on foot. The most amazing thing is that they ran out of food. My muscles were not aching and my energy was not dead. I was rejuvenated, motivated and already planning the next trip.
Why an Ebike Is Ideal for Outdoor Trips and Camping
The following are only some of reasons prompting me to swear by using an electric bike when travelling outdoors:
- Access to Remote Areas: Use tracks that cars can not get through, take weeks of hiking time.
- Flexible Pace: Make stops alongside the way. Not in a hurry, not a push.
- Eco-Friendly: There will be no noise pollution, emissions, or anything of the sort, only you and nature.
- Efficient Gear Transport: Use some kind of racks or roomy bags to carry your things.
- Wildlife Friendly: Be quiet and camouflage.
An off-road ebike is an amazing piece of technology in the modern day camping, whether you are on a weekend adventure or are simply in search of touching with nature once again.
Final Thoughts: Embrace the Ride, Explore the Wild
This weekend visit altered my perceptions about outdoor discovery. It also brought me back to realising that adventure does not mean planes, hotels or elaborate schedules. And all that you may need is only a decent electric bike to take you there, a camp or tent, and a very quiet place in the forest.
Therefore, should you have started planning a camping trip or a hike on a new path, then you should think of carrying an ebike with you. You will get further familiarly, view more wildlife, and get back home with stories you never anticipated, so did I.
